Texas Attorney General Takes Legal Action Against Acetaminophen Makers Regarding Autism Spectrum Claims

Courtroom Action
Ken Paxton, who supports former President Trump seeking election to US Senate, claimed the drug companies of concealing the risks of acetaminophen

The top legal official in Texas Paxton is filing a lawsuit against the makers of Tylenol, claiming the companies concealed alleged dangers that the pain reliever posed to children's neurological development.

The lawsuit arrives a month after Donald Trump promoted an unverified association between taking Tylenol - also known as paracetamol - during pregnancy and autism in young ones.

Paxton is taking legal action against J&J, which formerly manufactured the medication, the only pain reliever recommended for pregnant women, and Kenvue, which presently makes it.

In a statement, he claimed they "misled consumers by making money from discomfort and marketing drugs regardless of the risks."

Kenvue says there is insufficient reliable data connecting acetaminophen to autism.

"These manufacturers deceived for years, deliberately risking numerous people to increase profits," the attorney general, a Republican, stated.

The manufacturer commented that it was "seriously troubled by the perpetuation of misinformation on the reliability of paracetamol and the potential impact that could have on the welfare of women and children in America."

On its official site, the company also said it had "regularly reviewed the pertinent research and there is insufficient valid information that demonstrates a proven link between consuming acetaminophen and autism spectrum disorder."

Associations speaking for physicians and health professionals share this view.

The leading OB-GYN organization has declared acetaminophen - the primary component in acetaminophen - is among limited choices for expectant mothers to manage discomfort and fever, which can create major wellness concerns if not addressed.

"In over twenty years of studies on the utilization of acetaminophen in gestation, no reliable research has definitively established that the usage of paracetamol in any period of gestation results in neurodevelopmental disorders in young ones," the group said.

The lawsuit mentions recent announcements from the former administration in arguing the medication is potentially dangerous.

In recent weeks, Trump generated worry from health experts when he told expectant mothers to "resist strongly" not to take acetaminophen when ill.

Federal regulators then released a statement that doctors should consider limiting the usage of Tylenol, while also mentioning that "a causal relationship" between the medication and autism in minors has not been proven.

Health Secretary RFK Jr, who supervises the FDA, had pledged in spring to conduct "extensive scientific investigation" that would identify the origin of autism in a matter of months.

But experts warned that identifying a sole reason of autism - thought by researchers to be the consequence of a complicated interplay of genetic and external influences - would be difficult.

Autism spectrum disorder is a category of lifelong neurodivergence and impairment that impacts how individuals experience and interact with the environment, and is identified using doctors' observations.

In his legal document, the attorney general - who supports Trump who is seeking the Senate - alleges the manufacturer and J&J "willfully ignored and attempted to silence the research" around paracetamol and autism.

The lawsuit seeks to make the firms "remove any marketing or advertising" that asserts acetaminophen is secure for expectant mothers.

The Texas lawsuit parallels the complaints of a group of guardians of young ones with autism spectrum disorder and ADHD who sued the manufacturers of Tylenol in recently.

A federal judge threw out the case, stating research from the family's specialists was inconclusive.
