Rescued Ukrainian Lioness Receives Essential Dental Operation
A Wildlife Rescue Center
A three-year-old lioness rescued from conflict-ridden the war zone has received vital oral operation to extract a severely infected canine tooth resulting from an abscess.
Lira was brought to a wildlife sanctuary in Kent, England on March 14 after a fundraising effort by managing director Cam Whitnall, who collected half a million pounds to fund her and several other lions from Ukraine.

The surgery was performed on Friday by dentist an experienced animal dentist, who has treated about 450 big cats.
"When I examined Lira's jaw and mouth, I could see right away the damaged fang was severely infected," stated Mr Kertesz.
He thought the dental issue was due to a injury sustained more than a year ago, causing germs producing harmful substances inside the tooth.
"The approach I follow is non-human oral health issues should be addressed in the most predictable, the least invasive and most secure manner," he said.
The expert clarified that as the lioness did not need to catch prey, removal was the most "logical and humane option."
The Big Cat Sanctuary
The sanctuary said the extracted tooth was 3.14 inches in length, with Mr Kertesz having to remove a accumulated infection from under the fang and close the significant opening with multiple absorbable stitches.
He additionally conducted a root canal treatment on the corresponding top fang, which was also found to be infected.
The curator, manager at the facility, declared the procedure was a "complete success."
She noted the staff had spotted "a small lump on the lioness's face" but it had been impossible to assess "the extent of the problem."
"Lira will be somewhat sore to begin with, but now that the infectious materials are removed from her system, she will start to feel much better over the next few days," added Ms Smith.
This vital operation represents a significant step in Lira's recovery after her rescue from Ukraine.
