The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
