Champions League Matches Tonight: Manchester City v Bayer Leverkusen & Additional Games

Welcome to another evening of thrilling Champions League soccer. 9 matches are set for tonight, with three English teams in action. The Blues face Barcelona in the key fixture of the evening, while Newcastle travel to the French side and Manchester City welcome Leverkusen.

Current Standings

We're at the midway stage of the group stage, meaning the standings is taking form. Each of the six British sides are currently in the upper twelve, but there are only 2 pts separating 5th and sixteenth position, so there's a whiff of volatility about the whole thing. Everything is to play for.

Match Schedule

These are this evening's fixtures, all starting at 8:00 PM except where noted:

  • Ajax 0-1 Benfica (5.45pm)
  • Union SG and Galatasaray level at 0-0 (5.45pm)
  • Juventus face Bodo/Glimt
  • Chelsea v Barcelona
  • Villarreal meet Dortmund
  • Leverkusen visit Man City
  • Marseille v Newcastle
  • Qarabag play Napoli
  • Slavia Prague v Athletic Bilbao

Past Meetings

The only previous meeting between Marseille and Newcastle was the Uefa Cup semifinal of 2003-04, won by an emerging star from Ivory Coast. Manchester City and Bayer Leverkusen have never met before. Barcelona and Chelsea have a notable history.

Initial Game Reports

Just one goal in the first half of the early fixtures. Dahl's 6th-minute strike has given Benfica under Mourinho a 1-0 lead away to the Dutch side.

Marseille v Newcastle Preview

Although Newcastle arrived in the south of France fresh from their restorative two-one home English top-flight win against Manchester City on the weekend, and having beaten Union Saint-Gilloise, Benfica and Bilbao in the European Cup, their sole away victory since early April came in Brussels at Union Saint-Gilloise.

It's not that Eddie Howe was overly keen to discuss the mental side of this travel sickness. “The Champions League is distinct from domestic games,” said the coach, whose team are 6th in the European table, with nine pts from a possible twelve and automatic progression to the knockout phase almost within touching distance. “I am not sure if you can compare them.”

We have a separate live blog for Chelsea v Barcelona. Scott Murray, the minute-by-minute version of Diego Maradona is handling for that.
