A substantial bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a historic bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the market's opening auction of the calendar year.

The successful bid for the 243-kilogram fish came from the company of a well-known sushi restaurant group, which operates outlets domestically and abroad.

"An inaugural tuna signals fortune," remarked the entrepreneur, a notable figure at the traditional first sale.

Known as the Tuna Tycoon, this entrepreneur is noted for submitting high bids for bluefin tuna at these auspicious January auctions.

Auction Surprise and Historic Precedent

Following the auction, the successful bidder admitted to the press that he was "astonished at the winning bid," stating, "I believed we would be able to purchase it a little at a lower price, but the price escalated in no time."

This new acquisition exceeds his own notable purchases:

  • He paid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
  • He bid 155 million yen a year later.
  • In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).

Despite once remarking that he thought he "did too much," he has now gone on to break his personal record once again.

An Annual Spectacle of High Prices

The opening auction at the Tokyo fish market is traditionally known for sky-high prices. The previous year, the first tuna was bought for 207 million yen by a separate food company, which stated the fish would be served at its locations throughout the country.

The high-energy atmosphere at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has transformed into a major tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was no exception.

Immediate Consumption

The record-priced tuna was promptly sliced up for customers at the winner's sushi chains shortly after the auction concluded.

"I sense like I've commenced the year in a auspicious way after tasting something so lucky as the year gets underway," shared one happy patron.
